Many had found their way to the exam site where a banquet had been held by a member of the Hunter Association's Zodiac, Umaboozu. But all who arrived would find themselves forced into a deep sleep. After a few hours of transportation in secret, everyone would awaken to the sound of an air horn. The hunter hopefuls would find themselves floating in shallow waters with a badge assigning their examinee number clipped onto their clothing or person where it would be visible to others. The body of water the found themselves was a massive man-made pool with enough space for all 500+ examinees to float about casually. Careful observation of the surroundings and everyone would be able to see that at the far end of the pool there was a slide which spilled off into a river. Near the mouth of this slide was a tall and muscular man with a swim cap and goggles. He held a stoic and stern expression as he waited patiently for people to stir from their induced slumber.
"I hope everyone knows how to swim. Otherwise there will be a lot of during this years exams."
The man muttered to himself while treading water. While everyone would wake up on the shallow end of the pool in which even a child could stand up above the water line, to approach the man or the mouth of the slide one would have to brave a slope that was 30m down at its deepest. About the same depth as the river the slide spilled out into. "Wake up! It's time for the first exam trial! My name is Naga Resui, a One Star Current Hunter and I'll be overseeing this trial. You all have an hour to familiarize yourselves with swimming in this pool if you've never done it before. Once the time is up, everyone must follow me into the river. We will be swimming upstream until we reach the location of the next exam site. Anyone who fails to reach the exam site by tomorrow morning will be eliminated! You may stop at a bank of the river, but you must be on or over the water in order to progress. Getting on land to advance upstream is considered cheating and will lead to disqualification! Your practice time starts now!" Naga spoke in a booming voice that swept across the pool as he explained the exam and its simple rules. Simple, but perhaps unreasonable. They expected everyone to swim against the current of a river? Was this the Hunter Exam, or a Salmon exam!?
Welcome to the Hunter Exams! If you don't know why you begin this thread unconscious, please refer to the prologue Sakura Banquet. The rules are simple, your character must arrive at the end point up the river. Attempting to make progress up the river by land will disqualify you requiring that you swim or use some other form of travel up the river. A number of obstacles or treats may appear on the way during your swim. No swimsuits have been provided, so you must make do with what you arrived wearing and haul anything you've brought along up the river with you or abandon it. Next round of posts, the examiner will exit the pool and begin leading the marathon up the river. Use this post to make any preparations or plans.

Post by Kadath Embergaze on Aug 5, 2023 18:13:13 GMT
Kadath opened his eyes. He was in a pool of water, and his head was still bleary – what had happened? The last thing he remembered were petals falling, and then…sleep. Now he was in a shallow pool with all the other examinees, and he had no idea what to do next.
Fortunately, he didn’t have to wait long. Kadath heard a voice, and then turned to its source – an uncomfortably muscular man had apparently decided to take the mantle of examiner for now. “What the hell?” he said, shaking sleep from his mind. “I don’t even…”
Nevertheless, Kadath caught the gist of what was going to happen. He was to swim upstream – a task that would prove somewhat easier for him than it would for other contestants, given his physiology. Still, it wasn’t going to be easy in general.
…And seriously, why was that guy so buff? It was making him really uncomfortable.

For some reason it felt very calming for Belladonna, it felt like she was in her happy place. The last thing she remembered was the fight with the redhead, but she lost her conciousness right after that. The mafia slowly opened her eyes, noticing that she was floating on the water. That explained why she felt calm, although not as amazing as the time when she could soak in the tub. She noticed a number tag, clipped on her shirt, "110..." She read the number silently, as if trying to input it into her mind. Then the redhead began to look around, wanting to get a grasp of where she was at the moment.
As the man began to speak to the contender, Belladonna would cross her arm, trying to use her head. She wouldn't say that she was a great swimmer, but she was pretty good at it. However, she had to think about the way to preserve her energy because she couldn't tell how long they would be swimming in this pool.... This test was surely to test their stamina and endurance, she could only hope that the current wouldn't be a nuisance.
With a sigh, the red haired woman would begin to familiriaze herself with the water and do a little bit of warm ups so her body would be ready for the race.

One second Acha was getting ready to fight, possibly make a new friend. The next moment he was knocked out the last thing he saw was Nen charged flower petals floating towards him. The voice of the man floated inside his mind as he dreamed of riding a giant lobster in the ocean.
“BLAAAAAAAANTTTTTTTTTTTTT”
The sound of an airhorn ripped him from his crustaceous dream, ahead of him was water he was floating in shallow water. Had they moved them while they were asleep, or could the flower petals teleport you? Acha was once again in amazement at the power of Nen, he would need to train much harder to get somewhere even adjacent to these hunters. On his shirt was a patch with the number 279 emblazoned across. He looked across the pool opposite to them was a muscled man with a stern look. Naga would shout his name as well as the rules for the test. Telling them they had an hour to get accustomed to the pool. Acha didn’t have any trouble swimming he loved the sea; he’d look around to see if the man who punched him was nearby. If he wasn’t he wouldn’t worry about it, he’d surely see him during the test. At least he hoped he would, he had his allies as well. Hopefully they’d all pass otherwise he’d have to start building a new team.
Looking around the area there seemed to be a decent number of applicants more than 200 for sure. At first Acha had wondered if his number was picked at random or if there were truly that many hunters, the feast brawl had done a good job of stopping him from counting the crowd. In a pool it was a lot easier to see, and many were doing their stretches. Acha would wait until the 40-minute mark before he even considered it. He didn’t want to tire himself out, instead he was just floating on his back enjoying the peace.

Rocksy woke with a start, immediately swinging around her self with a heavy blow before her thoughts caught up to her actions, ready to slam whatever had attacked her and put her to sleep. It took a few scant moments to realise that it hadn't actually been an attack, and that everyone else was also still waking up. Sighing heavily she sat down at the edge of the swimming pool close to the slide, something the hunter had said struck a cord with her, "over the water".
Her plan was, if there was plants or foliage she could make a raft of some kind, enough to conserve energy on the water. Maybe fucking team up with some of the other hopefuls to take turns pulling it along the water. If that wouldn't work then at least she'd have a view of the rivers banks and could plan ahead as to how she'd take breaks.

Post by Tenju on Oct 26, 2023 14:05:27 GMT
Waking to the sloshing of water from others stirring nearby, Tenju rubbed his head to nurse a headache as he gathered himself. From banquet to soaking wet. What kind of treatment was this!? He hurried to check himself for the envelope he was supposed to deliver in a panic. It sat in his pocket somehow still firm and dry despite his haori being soaked through around it. He let out an exhale of relief which gave way to a puzzled expression. The envelope couldn't be opened or tampered with, but it also wasn't addressed to anyone so how could he know where to deliver it? He was so frustrated and focused on his own personal problem that he almost didn't notice the examiner until his loud voice started shouting information at them. Still perturbed, Tenju returned the envelope to its pocket and picked up his soggy bucket hat which floated nearby. With a huff he placed it on his head and glared through the drops of water dipping from the brim as he took in the instructions.
A marathon swim? Tenju felt conflicted immediately. He had never learned to swim! Life in the family estate had been spent studying and practicing medicine. Under his father and grandfather's strictly regimented training schedule there was no time for recreation. The most water he had ever been in was the house bath! The helpless Tenju's eyes began to dart back and forth rapidly as he searched for those who chose to practice and quickly set about doing his best to imitate them. He struggled in the kiddie depths like a fool for a full thirty minutes before finally learning to tread water and execute a rather amateur breast stroke technique. He then finally began to swim his way back to the shallow end where he would wait and conserve his strength for the remaining half hour.

Down past the carefully maintained pool, the water was released into a wide twisting river with the current pushing against the prospective hunters, the pool fed into a waterfall rather than the river itself, which continued to snake on behind them for miles and miles beyond what the eye could see. The banks where muddy and slippery, and a thick canopy of trees case shade over the river. Unlike what some may have been hoping however these where no-where close to normal trees, with thick black bark denoting them as Ironwoods. Bark heavy as rock protecting a lighter core of wood, with even the thinnest branches easily enough to hold up a persons weight.A sharp whistle sounded through the air as the hour passed, the Current Hunter speaking soon after. "That's all the time you have to practise, from now on its sink or swim. Lucky for all of you we're starting half way up the river, but that means if you're not careful the current can and will push you back beyond where you started."With that announced the Current Hunter turned and took a swan dive off the edge of the pool, starting to swim against the current at an incredible speed, the ripples from each stoke sending powerful waves backwards making it harder to swim the closer anyone got to him.
With the hunter having started it the prospective hunters quickly gathered themselves, pushing and shoving against each other in an attempt to be the first to get down the edge of the pool. More than one person found themselves getting shoved off the edge of the pool and hitting the hard ground instead of diving into the water, only to become disqualified when they climbed into the river, thanks to having "skipped" the first part of the river.
